Breyten is a small agricultural and former railway town in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Gert Sibande District. It lies in the province’s Grass and Wetlands region between Ermelo, Carolina and Chrissiesmeer, surrounded by open Highveld grasslands, cultivated farms, wetlands and low rocky ridges. The town was established on the farm Bothasrus, which had been granted to Lukas Potgieter after he lost a leg during the First Anglo-Boer War. Potgieter later sold the property to Nicolaas Breytenbach, after whom Breyten was named. The development of the railway through the district encouraged the growth of a village that served passengers, farmers and businesses moving between Johannesburg and the eastern parts of Mpumalanga.
Breyten became a busy railway stop during the early twentieth century, when trains transported people, livestock, agricultural produce and supplies across the Highveld.
