Port Shepstone is a major commercial, administrative and transport centre on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast. Regular coastal trade began in 1880, with products such as sugar, marble and lime transported between Port Shepstone and Durban.
Norwegian settlers arrived in the district in 1882 and contributed to farming, trade, religious life and the development of nearby Marburg. Port Shepstone’s harbour gradually declined after the railway connection with Durban opened in 1901 and sediment made navigation through the river mouth increasingly difficult. The black-and-white cast-iron lighthouse erected in 1906 remains one of the town’s most recognisable historical landmarks.
Port Shepstone serves as the principal business and service hub of the lower South Coast.
