The town was established on the farm Kromfontein after the death of its owner, P.A. Venter, in 1857. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Agriculture remains the cornerstone of the local economy, with maize, sunflower, wheat and livestock farming supporting the surrounding district. Local businesses, transport services, hospitality establishments and agricultural enterprises continue to serve both residents and travellers passing through this important N1 corridor.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, birdwatching, cycling, photography and scenic drives across the surrounding Highveld. Nearby nature reserves, farm experiences and recreational facilities provide excellent opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty and tranquillity of the central Free State.
