Southbroom is a tranquil coastal village in the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality on KwaZulu-Natal’s Lower South Coast. The area was initially known as Outlook before Alfred Eyles established a farm there during the late nineteenth century. The Eyles family later used the name Southbroom, taken from a family home in Devizes, England. Southbroom’s history includes farming, mission activity and the gradual growth of seaside tourism. Early agricultural properties were established inland from the coast, while the Swedish Zulu Mission took over the nearby Imbizane Mission during the early twentieth century. The Southbroom Hotel opened as a boarding house in 1935, and holiday homes, recreational facilities and permanent residences gradually expanded around the beaches and golf course.
