Lidgetton

Discover Lidgetton

Lidgetton is a small rural village in the uMngeni Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal’s uMgungundlovu District. It lies along the R103 between Howick and Balgowan, approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Howick, within the heart of the Midlands Meander. Rolling pastures, dairy farms, forest plantations, indigenous woodland, streams and distant mountain views create the peaceful country landscape surrounding the village.

The village takes its name from the Lidgett family, who settled in the district during the nineteenth century and farmed wattle on their property. Their historic family home, Lastingham, became one of the gracious country homesteads associated with the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Lidgetton later developed as a small farming, railway and trading settlement serving neighbouring estates and rural communities.

Railway transport helped connect Lidgetton’s farms with Howick, Pietermaritzburg and the agricultural districts farther north. The settlement remained modest in size, with trading stores, a post office and community facilities rather than a large commercial centre. Its rural character later attracted artists, potters, weavers and craftspeople, contributing to the creative identity for which this part of the Midlands is known.

Agriculture and tourism form important parts of the local economy. Dairy and cattle farming, pasture production, vegetables, timber plantations and other mixed agricultural activities shape the surrounding countryside. Guest lodges, wedding venues, restaurants, craft studios and small businesses benefit from the Midlands Meander, while nearby Howick provides larger shopping centres, healthcare, schools and professional services.

Lidgetton has a temperate, elevated Midlands climate. Summers are generally mild to warm, green and rainy, with afternoon thunderstorms, mist and humid periods over the valleys. Winters are considerably drier, with sunny days, cold mornings and low night-time temperatures, while frost may occur on exposed farms. Visitors should carry a warm layer because the weather and visibility can change quickly.

The countryside around Lidgetton offers opportunities for walking, cycling, mountain biking, fishing by arrangement, birdwatching and rural photography. Indigenous forest, wetlands, farm dams and open grasslands support varied birdlife and smaller animals. Lythwood Lodge maintains forest and countryside trails, while St Ives Lodge offers recreational facilities within its farm and dam landscape. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Accommodation in Lidgetton includes Lythwood Lodge, Pleasant Places by Sanaandi, Glen Eden Lodge, Millgate Cottage and self-catering properties in the Caversham Valley. St Ives Lodge and Venue provides further accommodation along the R103 near Lions River.
