Elandslaagte is a small rural settlement in the Alfred Duma Local Municipality of northern KwaZulu-Natal, approximately 26 kilometres north-east of Ladysmith. It lies near the N11 and R602 routes between Ladysmith, Newcastle and Dundee, with a railway line passing through the district. The name Elandslaagte is Afrikaans and is generally understood to mean “eland’s low-lying place” or “eland’s hollow”. Elandslaagte is best known for the Battle of Elandslaagte, fought on 21 October 1899 during the South African War.
