Drummond

Discover Drummond

Drummond is a scenic rural settlement in the Outer West region of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, approximately 45 kilometres west of central Durban. It lies along the historic R103 between Botha’s Hill and Cato Ridge, close to the N3 route linking Durban with Pietermaritzburg. Deep valleys, wooded slopes, grass-covered ridges and scattered country properties place Drummond within the distinctive landscape of the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

The settlement was named after F. C. Drummond, a former director of the Natal Land and Colonisation Company. Its early development was closely linked to the old inland road and railway routes used to transport passengers, mail, agricultural produce and other goods between Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the interior. Drummond Station and the surrounding transport corridor became part of the network that opened the hilly inland region to settlement and trade.

Drummond is particularly well known as the traditional halfway point of the Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. During the annual race, the normally quiet settlement becomes an important gathering place for runners, supporters and volunteers. Arthur’s Seat and the Comrades Wall of Honour, situated near the R103, preserve further connections with the heritage and traditions of this historic ultramarathon.

Tourism, hospitality, event venues, small businesses, agriculture, plant cultivation and country living contribute to the local economy. Drummond’s position near the N3, Cato Ridge and the Upper Highway area also connects residents with logistics, manufacturing, construction and commercial employment across the wider Outer West region. Restaurants and accommodation establishments serve leisure visitors, event guests and travellers moving between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Drummond has a warm inland subtropical climate. Summers are generally warm, humid and rainy, with afternoon thunderstorms, green vegetation and mist sometimes settling in the valleys. Winters are usually mild, sunny and considerably drier, although mornings and evenings can be cool. Weather conditions may change quickly across the elevated ridges, particularly during the summer rainfall season.

The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking, trail running, road cycling, mountain biking, photography, birdwatching and scenic drives. Rural roads pass forested slopes, grassland, small farms and viewpoints overlooking the Valley of a Thousand Hills. The varied vegetation provides habitat for numerous bird species and smaller animals, although access to private farms and trails should always be arranged in advance. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Accommodation in Drummond includes River Road Proteas Self-Catering Cottages, 1000 Hills Cabin and Protea Hill Guest House. Visitors can enjoy meals at The Castle Restaurant on Old Main Road, while further cafés and restaurants are available in nearby Botha’s Hill, Hillcrest and along the Valley of a Thousand Hills tourism routes.
