Coligny is a small agricultural and railway town in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality, within North West’s Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality. It lies along the N14 between Ventersdorp and Lichtenburg, approximately 29 km south-east of Lichtenburg and about 190 km west of Johannesburg. The town is surrounded by extensive maize fields, grazing land, grain farms and open Highveld plains. Coligny began developing after the railway from Welverdiend was extended through the area towards Lichtenburg during the early twentieth century. A station was established on the farm Rietvlei and was initially called Treurfontein, meaning “fountain of sorrow”, to distinguish it from another Rietvlei station. The settlement was later renamed Coligny in honour of Gaspard de Coligny, a French Huguenot leader who was killed during the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in Paris in 1572. Coligny was declared a township in 1922, and a town council was established in 1929.
